The Vegan Bride: Virtue Vegan Salon
With the weather heating up I recently decided to chop off my long hair and give myself a fresh cut! A few months ago I went vegan and ever since it has been a huge source of inspiration in my life. When a close friend of mine got a fantastic haircut at Virtue and she explained that it was vegan hair salon I was shocked, and I had tons of questions. I found some much needed inspiration on instagram by looking at haircuts of some of my favorite people, one of which was a past bride of ours, Chelsea (read more about her wedding here). Chelsea has a incredible blog called The Fenway Journal. When I saw her fantastic haircut I knew I just had to chop it off.
How amazing is her hair?!
When I plopped myself down into my stylist's chair at Virtue I showed her the photo on my phone and my stylist, Amy Jenney began to laugh, "That's my sister!" she exclaimed. I instantly knew I was in good hands. We had a good laugh over the irony that I had once been a part of Chelsea's wedding day and now, here I was in her chair for a haircut with her sister as my source of inspiration. Amy began to snip away a good 10 inches of blue ombre hair and I toggled back and forth between fear and excitement. We settled on a very cute, very short A symmetrical do that was a nod to Chelsea's sweet, short cut but still felt completely my own.
I learned a lot about Virtue during my haircut. Let's start off with the name. Virtue by definition means behavior showing high moral standards. I loved how clever the name alone was, and I fell more and more in love with the salon the longer I stayed. The style of the place was playful, eclectic, and feminine. I got to talk with Amy and the proud owner of Virtue, Melanie about all things vegan, hair, weddings and sustainability.
CW: What made you want to start a vegan hair salon?
M: At the time I was vegan and I think that when you make that choice you become very educated about the world and what we're putting into it and taking out of it.
CW: Are there any wedding hair trends that are very prominent this year?
M: We've been seeing a lot of loose, messier updos this year. The girls are very bohemian and want to look more casual and effortless.
A: Flower crowns and lower, messy updos or even girls having their hair down in loose waves has been really popular.
CW: Do you have to be vegan to work here?
M: No, that's not a requirement, and you don't have to be vegan to come in either! Here we are focused on what we can do for the environment and what we can do to be kind.
CW: What does it mean to have a vegan haircut?
M: We use products that contain no animal products or animal byproducts, our products also are void of animal testing and are botanical based.
CW: How would a bride's wedding party experience here be any different from another salon?
A: We're really happy to have brides and their bridal parties at virtue so we want to give them a great experience. We make sure to have a trial so the bride knows what her hair will look like for her wedding day and we treat them to vegan cupcakes and sweets from Pattycake bakery.
CW: What are some of your favorite vegan-friendly hair products?
A & M: The volumizing powder! If there was one beauty product we couldn't go without, that's it.
P.S. Check out the result of my haircut! I absolutely love how fun and easy it is and I love that everything that went into my haircut was cruelty free! Thank you to the entire team at Virtue and a special thanks to Amy for this super sweet and fun cut!
